I know exactly how you feel. For years I was just speeding through the day, working full time and raising a family. I would get to the end of the day, week, and month then wonder what I had actually done with my days. Everything felt like a blur!
I often found myself doing so many different things, at different times, that I would end the day wondering about what I had actually accomplished that day. How much time had I spent with my family, or on my side hustle? Was I reading enough, and how much time was I scrolling through social media? The question gnawed at me, because I really wanted to know that I was spending my time on the people and projects that mattered.
I started to do something that felt a little weird.
I tracked my time. I think most people don’t like the idea of time-tracking because it feels too “micro-managing”, and/or they’re afraid of the results. What if I quickly realize I spend too much time on thing X when I’m supposed to be on thing Y, or if I’m not doing X or Y?
For 30 days I tracked my time in 15 minute increments. After a just of week of tracking my time I noticed a difference in how I chose what to do with my time. I was more proactive with my choices instead of reacting to the moment. I was getting better at redirecting “mindless” time to something I’d rather do of lasting value.
