Americans love stuff. I do, we all do. We own clothes which are only worn once, possessions we have “just in case”, and countless little things packed up in storage because they had a brief moment of wonder in our lives. Call it a feeling of scarcity, being left out, or looking foolish, but we accumulate like no other society in history.
But our need to possess and prove doesn’t stop at possessions, we do the same thing with relationships and careers. We build up these sand castles around us, and pray the cosmic seas don’t wash them all away.
Your Life is not about Stuff
In a way, your life isn’t even about the people closest to you! You should love people, but not with an attitude of “please love me back so I’ll feel secure and important!” Love extravagantly with no thought of return.
You are able to love and give so freely when you have been freely loved. When your meaning lies outside of power, possessions, and pride. When you can look in the mirror, and say
“I am enough”
Below is a talk I gave to the young men at Camp Rockmont, because I believe this is a message young people (and all people) desperately need to hear. If this hit a nerve with you, please share with someone.
Have a great day!
